There is a deep urge within each of us to know what existence is all about, to know who we are, to know why we are here. The Wave focuses on the process of unfolding, on discovering the truth of who we are, our connection to all that is, and the endless discoveries of what it is to be divine consciousness in a human form. Each of us has our own unique process of dissolving the illusion inherent in this relative reality in which we live and embracing the absolute reality that is the truth of all existence. We experience some commonality in this adventure. Exploring both our commonality and honoring our individual uniqueness may be useful to each of us.

The author grew up active in the Presbyterian Church, with family members and a husband who were clergy of that denomination. Later, she spent fifteen years in the practice of meditation, often spending time visiting an ashram in upstate New York near where she lived, as well as an ashram in India. Later still, she spent time with Gangaji, an American teacher, and John de Ruiter, a Canadian, both of whom have deeply integrated the East and the West. These experiences have flavored her writing.

The Flow of the Wave

All that exists is consciousness, flowing as a wave, creating form and moving through form. In this relative reality in which we live, we are consciousness in the form of a human being. Consciousness is us and flows through us. Everything we see is consciousness in form. Nothing exists but this flow of creation. Essence is infinite, so vast it seems that we will not, at least while in this form, fully comprehend its magnificence. The most expanded mind, the most wide-open heart, bows in reverence to that little bit that is known of the depths of consciousness.

We can seek to describe our understanding of Essence by using metaphors familiar to us on this earth plane. In so doing, we are attempting to describe the indescribable. Given this severe limitation, perhaps the metaphor of a wave can be useful. From the perspective of our relative reality, as our awareness expands, we can experience ourselves as being on the wave that both flows through and is all of creation. As we become more aware that we are this wave, we discover it could not be otherwise; there is no other way to be. The wave of consciousness is everything. Essence is consciousness. We have access to the awareness of the wave as it flows through the core of our innermost being. The silence of our hearts is where we can most easily experience ourselves flowing with the wave in the ocean of consciousness, at harmony with all that is.

While in this human form, we experience the illusion of separation from Essence. It is just that-an illusion. In absolute reality, all that exists is pure consciousness; there is no human form, no wave, and no ocean separate from that. However, since we have taken birth into relative reality as a seemingly separate form, we are slowly finding our way through the illusion, longing to discover the truth of the oneness of our existence.

We can experience ourselves flowing with the wave of consciousness in varied individual ways. One way is that as we fully awaken to the present moment, we become aware of the process of moving with the wave of consciousness as it flows around and within us, while exposing us to truth through every circumstance in our lives. Being the wave is an ever-deepening process that can unfold into moment-to-moment awareness of who we truly are, as well as open us to peak experiences that reveal the truth of our oneness with Essence. In this way, we move forward through life, flowing with the wave.

There is very little stagnancy, very little holding on, very little wanting to figure out, and much more movement, action, manifestation, and collaboration. We absorb experiences that reveal the union of what is. Not just what is here, but what is everywhere. We have a sense of always moving through depth and substance. Everything perceived from the viewpoint of absolute consciousness reveals a clarity that is experienced as we move through life. We continually deepen our awareness in such a way as to allow the revelation of truth into every moment, and in doing so we simultaneously, very strongly, reaffirm that truth.

This way of being with the wave is a replica of the very foundation of the universe. Unity allows itself to appear in particular forms only to dissolve back into unity. As we expand our awareness, we begin to see everywhere the replication of this pattern of unity, apparently breaking into components to eventually coming back to unity. By taking birth into form, we seemingly separated from Essence and perceive ourselves as separate from other forms that inhabit this earth plane. Eventually we will all come to realize we are all that from which we came.

Another example of this might be that, as we grow and develop, we create with our minds tightly held beliefs or mental constructs. As we become more aware, these constructs start breaking down into components, only to dissolve into the realization that we don't know, into the clarity of truth.

Each of us has the capacity for real connection, real union, with Essence. Actually, we are always in union with Essence. All that is missing is our awareness of that inherent, inseparable state. We celebrate when we realize we are not really flowing on or with a wave and have an experience that we are the wave. The continual awareness of oneness with the wave is not automatic after such realizations. The deepening understanding, the expansion of the heart, and the surrender to flowing as Essence continues throughout our lifetimes. Continual noticing and dexterity helps us to remain in awareness of being one with the wave of creation.
